For years, your phone number has been the key people use to find you on WhatsApp. If someone wanted to start a conversation with you, the usual solution was simple: share your number.
That works when you are talking to friends and family. It becomes less comfortable when the person on the other side is a new client, a stranger from an online community, a potential business contact, or someone you have just met.
WhatsApp is now introducing another option
The platform is adding usernames, giving users a way to connect with new people without directly sharing their phone numbers. WhatsApp announced the feature on 29 June 2026 and opened username reservations the same week, ahead of a wider launch later in the year.
There is an important caveat for readers in India, and we will come to it in detail further down: the Indian government has asked WhatsApp to hold the rollout in this country while consultations continue.

What Is a WhatsApp Username?
A WhatsApp username is a unique identifier that can be used when connecting with new people on the platform.
Instead of immediately giving a new contact your phone number, you can share your username once the feature is live for your account
The idea is particularly useful when you want to be reachable without making your personal number part of the introduction.
For example, imagine you are a freelance video editor who receives an enquiry through Instagram. The person wants to continue the conversation on WhatsApp, but you do not necessarily want to give a stranger your personal number immediately.
A username provides another way to begin that conversation.
However, there is an important distinction: WhatsApp usernames do not replace phone numbers as the foundation of your WhatsApp account. A phone number is still required to register. The username is an additional identity layer rather than a replacement for your registered number.
Why Is WhatsApp Introducing Usernames?
The main reason is privacy.
Phone numbers are more personal than usernames. A number can be connected to other accounts, services and personal communication, so many people prefer not to distribute it widely.
WhatsApp’s approach gives users more control over what they reveal when meeting someone for the first time.
